Fall: Looking for the perfect destination to run a marathon? Look no further than Maine’s pristine, Mount Desert Island Marathon. This area is home to the ever famous Acadia National Park which offers one of the most beautiful and complete vacation spots in the entire United States. The Mount Desert Island Marathon course is in a word, breathtaking! It offers runners birds-eye views of the vast, blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, charming island village centers and the pink granite mountains. During this time of year the forest is at it’s peak (almost blinding) fall colors, crystal clear lakes offer a mirror image of the fall colors and then there is Acadia National Park. You can become so distracted by all the sites you may forget you’re even running a marathon. This annual marathon has been going strong for over 10 years and this year the marathon will host a guest runner 1984 Olympic Marathon Champion, Joan Benoit Samuelson. So why not go for a run?

Fall: Machias Seal Island, you may have never heard of it before. It lies between and Jonesport and there are only a few small charter boats that make daily trips from both these ports in summer and fall. The island offers more than a glimpse of the largest colony of Atlantic Puffins in the United States. It is one of the only places in Maine where Puffin enthusiast can sit in a blind and observe from just a few feet away the antics of these colorful and comical birds who’s presence seems out of place with the foggy seascapes they inhabit. Behind the blinds, the puffins are close enough to touch and to watch their ungraceful landings and almost funny carrying ons. The birds even perch on top of the blinds which gives observers a great up close view of these unique creatures. After a visit to this island one thing becomes clear, although there may be disputes over the islands ownership, the puffins definitely rule the land!

Fall: For visitors getting up before sunrise to watch the morning sun peak over Cadillac Mountain is a good reason to rise early. Locals in Bar Harbor have an even better reason. The much anticipated annual Early Bird Sale and Pajama Party which has been going storing for the last 12 years. Each year this event keeps getting larger and funnier with more and more businesses joining the fun and activities. Some of the best sales of the season happen during 6 am to 9 am in the morning. The locals love it and visitors are sure to find some wonderful gifts in these speciality stores, art gallaries and gift shops. With discounts up to 50% off in some stores you are sure to fill your Christmas gift list with some great items and not have to break the bank doing so. As a treat the stores offer shoppers free hot chocolate and treats. Shoppers can earn an extra 5% off just for showing up in their pj’s. After the Early Bird sale has ended shoppers gather in the Village Green and parade around while judges hand out prizes for the best clad shoppers. All the hotels offer special rates for this fun weekend so why not make it a shopping getaway!

Fall: Why not host a holiday party and invite some of your closest friends and celebrate in with festive holiday cheer. Depending on your budget and your style you can be as fancy or simplistic as you would like. This is a perfect way to get together and enjoy time before the holiday. Aim for a party where no one wants to leave, everyone is talking, eating, drinking, sharing stories, making new friends and enjoying great food, themed desserts and maybe even some fun activities. Many people get overwhelmed with the thought of planning a party but, just remember, your friends are just glad to be able to spend time together as a group so why not throw caution to the wind and go ahead and start planning a fun holiday get together!
