Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer: If you want to increase your reading capacity this fall then you should consider starting a book club. If you decide to start your own group, your first task is to recruit members. The number of members you have in your book club will be determined by where you decide to have your meetings. Another thing to consider before you invite your participants is that more people leads to more discussion which can make it confusing unless you have a good moderator who is skilled at keeping discussions on track. On the flip side, too few participates will lead to littley discussion and so you really need to think about achieving the perfect balance. Most people recruit solely from friends or coworkers although you don’t need to stop there. Once you have a solid group of people together, it’s time to set some guidelines for your group. Things to decide are how and who picks the books and when and where you will meet. Most book clubs typically meet once a month and discuss one book per meeting. In the past, we have had each member recommend a book for their month and they are responsible for leading the discussion on that book. To be sure, planning and running your own book club can be a challenge. But if done properly, your book club will prove to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for you and your peers.

Orono: Things To Do While Your In Town
Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: Orono is home to the University of Maine’s largest college campus but, it also offers visitors a variety of things to do. Last fall, we took a trip to the Bog Boardwalk, which is a one mile loop trail that starts in the Bangor City Forest and loops around through the bogs behind the University. We enjoyed this peaceful hike observing the bog and its natural beauty and wild life. I was able to get some great pictures of the moss carpet that edges the bog. Another great thing to do in Orono is to visit the farmers market. This is one of the largest farmers markets that I have been to with over 25 participants and a variety of fresh produce, organic cheese and meets and very healthy plants and seedlings. Whenever I am up there I always make sure to stop in at The Store – Ampersand. This place has the best wine selection as well as great coffee and baked goods. The Bear Brew Pub is a fun place to hang out and grab a bite to eat. The downstairs is a restaurant with great pub food and the upstairs offers a bar and pool tables if you are looking for something to do. Another great stop is the University of Maine Museum of Art which has a growing collection of fine art which includes works from Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer. This museum is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon and admission is free which makes it even better. Orono definitely has a wide variety of things to do while your in town, so check them out.
