Local Charities: Tis’ The Season For Giving

Fall: Tis’ the season for giving so why not help out in your local community by volunteering. Many area food banks need donations or pick a card of the Giving Tree and help out a less fortunate person this holiday season. There are many charities to choose from and whether it is your time or your money it’s definitely a gift that pays you back. In addition to holiday related charitable causes there is also the Coats for Kids annual giving drive. Many children will only have a warm coat this winter because of this program. So don’t get so caught during this holiday season that you forget to give something back. They may never get to say thank you personally but, it’s all part of the spirit of Christmas!

Orono: Things To Do While Your In Town

Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: Orono is home to the University of Maine’s largest college campus but, it also offers visitors a variety of things to do. Last fall, we took a trip to the Bog Boardwalk, which is a one mile loop trail that starts in the Bangor City Forest and loops around through the bogs behind the University. We enjoyed this peaceful hike observing the bog and its natural beauty and wild life. I was able to get some great pictures of the moss carpet that edges the bog. Another great thing to do in Orono is to visit the farmers market. This is one of the largest farmers markets that I have been to with over 25 participants and a variety of fresh produce, organic cheese and meets and very healthy plants and seedlings. Whenever I am up there I always make sure to stop in at The Store – Ampersand. This place has the best wine selection as well as great coffee and baked goods. The Bear Brew Pub is a fun place to hang out and grab a bite to eat. The downstairs is a restaurant with great pub food and the upstairs offers a bar and pool tables if you are looking for something to do. Another great stop is the University of Maine Museum of Art which has a growing collection of fine art which includes works from Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer. This museum is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon and admission is free which makes it even better. Orono definitely has a wide variety of things to do while your in town, so check them out.
