Oceans Treasure Chest: The Fine Art of Collecting Sea Glass

Summer: There is a treasure chest that awaits you at some of the beaches in Maine. Take some time on your next trip to the beach and look down, that’s right, down. You will be amazed at what you discover. Shining gently in the sunlight and sand are shards of some of the prettiest gems in the ocean, sea glass. For those who have never taken the time to examine these precious treasures I am not talking about broken pieces of glass on the beach. The ocean has a wonderful way in wearing away the sharp edges and giving the natural glass a soft, milky hue. One of the best beaches in my area to find these gems is on the East End Beach. Sea glass comes in all colors but, most common is the green, “white” clear and brown. The special pieces are the shades of aqua and royal blue. Make sure you have something to carry your precious finds in like a pail or bucket. This is a wonderful activity for my children who now can spot a piece with hawk like radar. Another great spot for collecting is Fort Popham in Phippsburg. There is a pool to the right of the fort where sea glass seems to gather. Artist have known about it’s beauty for years and now you will too. Start your own collection today, it’s worth the trip.

The Super Duck: Portland’s Amphibious Tour Boat

Summer: Nothing screams tourist than tour buses and trollies but, what a fun way to spend some time learning about the city you live in aboard the Super Duck! This is not your typical tour bus because mid-way through the 90 minute tour the rolling bus suddenly becomes a floating boat! That’s right, this 39 foot vehicle gives a tour of Portland on both land and sea. From the seats of the Super Duck we were able to enjoy the sites of Casco Bay. It is a fun adventure to take the whole family on and is interesting for anyone including native Portlanders. The Super Duck is very stable so even those who tend to be prone to motion sickness like myself should be fine. The tour begins in the Old Port section of Portland and enters the water on the Eastern Promenades boat ramp. You cruise right past Fort Gorges which is hard to get to unless you have your own boat. It offers a great view of Portland Harbor and is a great way to entertain out of town guest. So jump aboard the boat or bus whichever it is it is definitely fun!

Portland Seadogs: Are You Ready For Some Baseball?

Summer: Baseball and summer, the two go hand in hand. What better way to spend sometime in America’s favorite past-time than at a Portland Seadogs baseball game. The Portland Seadogs, a Redsox minor league team, have been playing ball at Hadlock Field in Portland since 1994. The fans love their hometown team and the kids love Slugger, the teams animated mascot. Whether you catch a afternoon game or an evening one under the lights, the whole family will have a blast.Ticket prices are very reasonable making going to the game an affordable affair. Once there, you can kick back and enjoy the game along with a “Seadog” biscuit (cookie ice cream sandwhich). There is the Seadog store where you can purchase all the Seadog merchandise needed to look like a true fan. So why not catch a game with Maine’s own hometown team, the Portland Seadogs!

Peaks Island: Casco Bay’s Most Popular Island

Along the way you get to enjoy the beautiful sites. It is the perfect place to kick back and relax or explore the island and all that it has to offer. You can rent a bike and go for your own around the shore tour scoping out secluded beaches and gorgeous homes. There is also kayaking and just off the ferry you will find kayak rentals. A fun way to spend time in the kayak is to explore Fort Gorges. There are some great galleries where you can find intresting local art and paintings.
