Summer: Fort Edgecomb is a great stopping spot for a picnic on your way through Wiscasset. After waiting in line to cross the bridge you may need a break from the car. The fort is located in North Edgecomb and easy to find. This historic fort was built on the Shepscot River in 1808 to protect Wiscasset, once the most important shipping centers north of Boston. The original octagonal blockhouse and restored fortification stand in the center of beautiful grass covered fields perfect for a family picnic. Your family can enjoy the beauty of the Sheepscot and may even catch a peak of a harbor seal or osprey flying over head. Open mid-June to Labor Day, you make want to make this historic fort one of your stops along Route 1 this summer.

Summer: What a great combination, dinner and the theater and even better you can find it all in one spot at Carousel Music Theater. Located in scenic Boothbay Harbor, Carousel runs a four show summer season schedule that ranges from cabaret, jazz, broadway and pop. This dinner theater is a great way to spend the night with a group of friends. There isn’t a bad seat in the house and the food is great. The cast consist of some of the best upcoming national talent on broadway. The theater is open from June to Columbus Day weekend and the shows are performed Tuesday through Saturday. Summer: Celebrating their 140th year the Belfast and Moosehad Lake Railroad is located in the heart of Waldo County. The railroad is one of the oldest continuously operating of it’s kind and hopping on board in Belfast is worth the trip. The train offers riders a unique perspective of history while making it’s way to the Unity, Maine station. The train excursions are narrated while the train crosses two train trestles, runs along the shores of Lake Winnecook and through the countryside, marshlands, fields and streams. There is a dining car so riders can grab a bite to eat and a musuem for you to view old artifacts and photos of days gone by. But mostly, it is just fun and enjoy the views as to chug along the countryside on board an authentic steam locomotive. The kids will love the trip so bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun.
Lobster Boat Racing: The Kentucky Derby Of Maine
Summer: Looking for a true Maine experience? Take a ride along the coast from Boothbay Harbor to Winter Harbor and your sure to come across one of the most unique Maine sports going, Lobster Boat Racing. Now in the 18th year with over 8 locations participating in any weekend from June to August you will be able to see why these races are so popular throughout the state. Lobster boat races are not for the faint at heart. The contenders take them seriously and fans are plentiful. While recently at the races in Boothbay Harbor, you could hear race fans cheering for their favorites. The chants and signs for Ripple, Miss Attitude and Cry Baby could be heard faintly over the rumble of these powerful boats. There were several categories which allows racers to accumulate points in their divisions throughout the season. Racers follow the circuit and accumulate the prizes for the winners. If you are going to attend one of these races they begin at 10 am so get there early to ensure a prime spot.
