Fort Edgecomb: Wiscasset Harbor’s Defender

Summer: Fort Edgecomb is a great stopping spot for a picnic on your way through Wiscasset. After waiting in line to cross the bridge you may need a break from the car. The fort is located in North Edgecomb and easy to find. This historic fort was built on the Shepscot River in 1808 to protect Wiscasset, once the most important shipping centers north of Boston. The original octagonal blockhouse and restored fortification stand in the center of beautiful grass covered fields perfect for a family picnic. Your family can enjoy the beauty of the Sheepscot and may even catch a peak of a harbor seal or osprey flying over head. Open mid-June to Labor Day, you make want to make this historic fort one of your stops along Route 1 this summer.
