Mount Kineo is an island inside Moosehead Lake, so you will need to take a water taxi, boat, kayak, or canoe to get to the base to start your climb. On the 800 foot mountain, you can hike to the top, enjoy some rock climbing, or repel down the rock face. Guided rock climbing and repelling trips are available and provide a great way to do something new for your next family vacation. Once at the top, you will be able to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding Moosehead Lake region and the old fire tower at the summit of Mount Kineo.

Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race: Spills And Thrills
Spring: The third week of April thrillseekers and spectators flock to the Bangor area for this popular spring event. The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race has been drawing a crowd since it’s inception in 1967. The 16.5 mile race is open to the public and competitiors come from all over to to enjoy this annual rite of spring. The course consists of 10 miles of flatwater, and six miles of class I-IV rapids with a mandatory portage of the class IV rapids. Spectators line the banks of the river at the rapids eagerly anticipating the action of upsets and flipped boats. The area around Six Mile Falls is the most popular spot for viewing the mayhem and carnage that often occurs. The character of the race is generally dictated by the rivers varied flows and is different from year to year, adding to the challenge. The finish line lies at the confluence of the Kenduskeag and Penobscot rivers, and win or lose it’s all about getting out and enjoying a springtime tradition in Maine.
Gulf Hagas: Maine’s Grand Canyon
Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall: The 3.5 mile section of the Pleasant River known as Gulf Hagas is an amazing place to spend a day hiking and exploring. The river has carved a 400 foot deep gorge through slate bedrock, and is commonly referred to as Maine’s “Grand Canyon”. Visitors can enjoy views of the impressive waterfalls and swim in plunge pools along the river by hiking the well maintained trails along its course. It comes as no surprise that Gulf Hagas is registered as a National Natural Landmark. This area is also home to Katahdin Iron Works and remnants of the old blast furnace still remain. The Appalachian trail can be accessed here and features nearby White Cap Mountain with killer north woods views. The Nature Conservancy maintains a 35 acre preserve along the river, another National Natural Landmark, known as the “Hermitage” featuring some of Maine’s oldest and tallest White Pines. There are endless recreational opportunities here including fly fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, swimming, snowshoeing, kayaking, and rock and ice climbing. This amazing canyon has something for everyone to discover.
Kokadjo: A Town Worth Slowing Down For
Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall: Most visitors traveling east of Greenville pass right by the tiny village of Kokadjo, often only noticing the sign in town that states “Welcome to Kokajdo, Population not many”. But don’t let Kokadjo’s humble looks fool you, if your after peace and quiet in the Northwoods, than Kokadjo’s the right spot to be. For starters, the Roach River runs right through town and is an excellent spot to fly fish for Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon. Nearby Roach Ponds and Moosehead Lake offer rental cabins, boating, swimming, and fishing opportunities and plenty of peace and quiet. This area is home to a large population of Moose, frequently seen along the roadsides or feeding in local ponds. In fall the hills light up with color, and most folks enjoy just driving around enjoying the views. In winter the area is an important hub for snowmobilers and link between the towns of Millinocket and Greenville. Not to mention dogsledding, ice fishing, skiing and snowboarding options on surrounding lakes and mountains. Come be a part of the “Not Many” population of Kokadjo.
