Movie Locations: Hollywood Comes To Maine

Fall: Did you know that Maine is a hot spot for movie set locations? Why not take a ride and search out these great locations then rent the movies and see if you recognize these Maine spots in the movies. Message In The Bottle starring Kevin Costner was filmed in Maine and one of the primary filming locations was New Harbor, a fishing village and tourist destination south of Damariscotta. In addition to New Harbor, many of the beach scenes were filmed in Phippsburg on gorgeous Popham Beach. Empire Falls, which was a popular HBO movie was filmed all over Maine in towns like Waterville, York, Norridgewock, and Kennebunkport. Maine resident, Stephen King’s movie Thinner was filmed in Maine from Augusta to Camden. Many of the films extras came from the Camden area where Hollywood had an extras casting call. Mel Gibson’s, Man Without a Face was filmed in a private home on Deer Isle in Penobscot Bay, the second largest of Maine’s coastal islands. He shops in Lincolnville General Store and visits Bowdoin College. So take some time and rent a movie then go out location scouting right here in Maine.

The Theater At Monmouth: Maine’s Shakespearian Theater

Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: The Theater in Monmouth was established in 1970 in this small central Maine town. The Theater was given the title Shakespearian Theater in Maine by the Maine legislature five years later. Visitors to this community theater will see why when they attend one of their productions. The professional caliber of these nationally recognized plays all housed in a historically recognized building, Cumston Hall. Their 2008 schedule will mark their 39th season of bringing some of the finest productions to the stages of this theater in Maine. The theater’s season opens in January with the Shakespearian classic, Macbeth. The theater is easy to find located right in the heart of Monmouth on Main Street.

State Museum: Augusta

Moxie Falls: A Short Hike With A Huge Reward

Spring, Summer, Fall: Moxie Falls is Maine’s highest waterfall and a great place to spend a day with the family. The falls are over 90 feet tall and fill the air in this little canyon with mist on a breezy day. A short hike down a well maintained trail through balsam scented forest leads to multiple vantage points of the falls. From here there are side trails leading to smaller falls and plunge pools well suited for a refreshing swim on a hot summer day. It’s a great place to cool off, have a picnic or just enjoy the sights and sounds of the Maine Woods. Located just off the Lake Moxie road outside the town of The Forks there is plenty of room to park and explore this beautiful spot at your own pace.
