O Christmas Tree: Portland’s Annual Tree Lighting

Fall: O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree…tis the season! What a better way to kick it all off than with the annual tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Monument Square. How fun to spend the night bundled up with the ones you love and watch the 50 foot evergreen come alive with thousands of twinkling lights. The event is held every year, the Friday after Thanksgiving. There is entertainment for the whole family with a performance by the Maine State Ballet, Portland Symphony Orchestra and Rick Charette and the Bubble Gum Band. If you want to get into the holiday giving spirit this tree lighting ceremony is part of greater Portland’s annual toy drive. So why not grab a cup of hot chocolate, bring and unwrapped gift and join in the fun at the annual tree lighting ceremony this year!

The Nutcracker: Maine State Ballet Company

Fall: If you have never been to the ballet then now is the time to get lost in the story of Clara and the Nutcracker prince. Live on the stage of the Merrill Auditorium, the Portland Ballet Company brings this classic story to life. This perennial favorite draws a crowd that never leaves disappointed. There are both evening and matinee performances so all age groups can attend. What a fun way to spend an evening with family or friends. The performance is impeccable and the audience is captivated as Clara and her family make their way through the Land of Snow. The set is beautiful, the music is performed perfectly by the Maine State Ballet Orchestra and the ballerinas…they are magical.

The Magic Of Christmas: The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Seasonal Event

Fall: The Magic of Christmas, what a wonderful way to spend an evening enjoying the Portland Symphony Orchestra perform. This annual Christmas event runs through the weekend before Christmas. It is magical, to hear the orchestra perform the classics such as Sleigh Ride and the Hallelujah chorus from the Messiah. The chorus and sing along portion of the show makes for a festive event for the whole family. There are matinee shows available for the young or old and Merrill Auditorium is the perfect spot for such a wonderful musical event. I hear those sleigh bells ringing, so don’t miss out. One of my favorite parts is the reading of The Night Before Christmas. Each season there are special guest and with 14 show times to choose from you just can’t beat the Magic of Christmas.

A Christmas Carol: Portland Stage Company’s Christmas Special

Fall: Portland Stage Company’s presentation of A Christmas Carol remains remarkably trueto form to Dickens’ original book. The story seems to come alive allowing the audience to get lost in the traditional Dickens tale. You need to come and enjoy the experience of Scrooge’s encounters with the spirits of past, present, and yet-to-come in the way that the author intended. Spend the evening with the cast of A Christmas Story who really bring this production home with their acting and lush costumes. You will find yourself getting lost as you travel back in time to a Victorian England. You will see the ghosts of the past visit Scrooge reminding him of the important things and helping this lonely old miser regain his heart. Portland Stage Company does a fabulous job with their classic production. The play opens the last weekend of November and runs through until Christmas, don’t miss out on this classic treasure!
