International Snowmobile Weekend: Travel Along The Border

Winter: If you are in the northern part of the state or traveling up that way the first weekend in February you may want to swing in and check out the annual International Snowmobile Weekend. This festival is a three day long event which is a shared celebration with their neighbors in New Brunswick, Canada. The festival is kicked off with the annual International Lucky run which is a 400 mile trail system that runs along and sometimes crosses into Canada. Participants can enjoy the scenic groomed trails and ride along the Maine/Canadian border. Participants of the International Snowmobile Weekend celebrate with an evening party, a casino night, a community dinner live music and dancing and a moonlight snowmobile drag racing competition. Acadian Village: History Of A Region

Winter, Spring,Summer & Fall: The St. John’s Valley region in northern Maine is home to one of the state’s largest historic sites, Acadian Village. Acadian Village is located just north of Van Buren and serves as a tribute to the Acadian heritage of the people of Maine. Tours of the museum are offered and visitors can tour a dozen of buildings such as the railroad station, chapel, school house and black smiths shop would have looked like back in the early 1800’s. Another place to see is located in the town of Lille. The name may not be one of Maine’s most recognized towns but, it is home to the Musee Culturel du Mont Carmel which is a restored Catholic church that now serves as a museum and cultural center. The building proudly displays two hand carved angels playing the trumpets on each of its turrets. These carvings were done by a renown sculptor from Quebec in 1908.

If you don’t want to head south for February break you may want to consider this fun filled event. “Caribou is Fabulous in February” and with all the activities it’s hard for visitors not to agree. What winter celebration wouldn’t be complete without snowmobile races, skiing, bonfires, dances, shows, canoe rides, sleigh rides, a comedy night, ice skating and drag races. The event celebrates winter in Maine and the town really pulls together to make the community and visitors part of this family filled celebration. Dog Sledding: The Can-AM International Crown

Winter: If you have never attended an official dog sled race competition than the Can-AM International Sled Dog races are for you. This race has been held in Fort Kent for the last sixteen years. With a $40,000 dollar purse and some of the best dog sled teams in the US and Canada, this race is both exciting for participants and observers. The race consist of three divisions, 30, 60 and 250 mile runs with the latter being a qualifying race for the famous and coveted, Iditarod. The race started as a way to provide provide mushers with an opportunity to race locally and has since turned into one of the longest distance races in the east. Held in the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge, the trails are long and wide perfect for viewing and photographing the races. The crowd is loyal and loves the excitement of dog sled races. Fort Kent is the place to be in March so plan your trip this year.

Presque Isle: Things To Do In The Heart Of Northern Maine

Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: In the heart of Aroostook County you can find Presque Isle. With so many small towns in the northern region of Maine, Presque Isle is considered to be a big city boasting it’s own shopping mall and plenty of other things to do. If you are planning on a trip to see what the Northern part of the state is all about then the first thing you will encounter along the way on Route 1is the Maine Solar System Model. Passerby’s can view all of the planets on their drive from Houlton to Presque Isle. This is pretty neat to see this three dimensional solar system model which is well marked and visitors can pick up a brochure in Houlton to learn how it was created. Another fun thing to do is to check out the Crown of Maine Balloon Festival held in August each year. This hot air balloon festival is quite a treat and visitors can participate by taking a ride in one of the balloons. They always have the best chicken BBQ and a golf scramble that is open to the public which makes this a weekend event. Maybe a balloon ride is not fast paced enough for you then rev your engine and head over to the Spud Speedway in nearby Caribou. With stock car racing, street car racing and a whole bunch of activities it is a fun way to spend some time. The Nordic Heritage Center is a great place to spend some time in the “great outdoors” offering professionally designed trails for hiking and mountain biking in the warm months and Nordic cross country skiing in the winter months. The Center has a great lodge to grab some food in or just sit and enjoy the roaring fire. Another great place to hit the slopes is Big Rock Ski area which boast “big mountain skiing in a family atmosphere” the rates are very reasonable and the skiing is great. They also offer snow shoe trails as well as cross country trails. Presque Isle is a four season wonderland with plenty of things to do for all.
