Winter: Spring usually means project time for Maine’s homeowners. The list goes on of what needs to be done to maintain your home. If you are in the process of putting your to do list together now than a trip to the annual Maine Home, Remodeling and Garden Show is a must. This show has been held in February at the Cumberland County Civic Center and is a great resource for those looking for home improvement services and advice, gardening tips and product demonstrations. After the show you could head to the Old Port and stop in at Brian Boru’s to mull over your home to do list. This is a great establishment. Boru’s has a friendly, welcoming environment with pub style seating, great food and cold beer. The crowd is pretty laid back and the second floor usually has music of some sort playing. Sunday afternoons they usually have Irish music playing on the second level so it would be a perfect stop after walking around the Civic Center all day.

Winter: For those who love to play golf, Maine winters may seem like they will never end. If you don’t think you can wait for the snow to melt and a trip down south is out of the question then you should check out some of the state’s indoor golf centers. If you are in the Portland area there is the Fore Season which offers golfers full swing simulators so you actually feel like you are playing a real game of golf. In Biddeford golfers will find Out of the Rough which offers lessons, tournaments and leagues. You get to choose the course and the level of difficulty. For all you die hards, don’t forget the Portland Golf Expo which runs in March. Here you can try out the newest equipment on the market and get some of the best prices on both new and used equipment. This is a great way to get all the items you need to make your first round of the season your best.
Portland: Things To Do When There’s Nothing To Do

From art to live music events this city if full of unique and interesting places to go. In the center of town, you will find the Portland Museum of Art which offers Sunday morning jazz breakfast events. Every week you can enjoy live music and breakfast along with the art of course. The State Theater in the heart of the Arts District offers visitors shows and concerts on a regular basis. If you have kids, the Children’s Museum is a great place to spend time. With interactive activities, kids can pretend to run a space shuttle, be a weatherperson, run a store or be a fireman. Looking for a hot spot for a night out on the town, then check out the Old Port. This restored historical district is has a great collection of pubs, fine dining and dance clubs. Not far from the downtown area is the one of the state’s largest malls with many specialty shops and restaurants surrounding it. Want to catch a movie, check out the stadium style seating at Cinemagic. Whatever you decide to do you can find it here in Portland.

If the Old Port area is not your scene and you are looking for place that all ages can co-mingle than CJ’s Place may be your spot. CJ’s has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with a real “local hangout” feel. The drinks are relatively cheap and the food is good. This is the place to head if hanging out with friends for a couple of drinks, listening to some music and dancing a little is on the agenda. If it’s happy hour after a long day in the office you’re in search of, than a new upscale place to check out is Empire. This posh new club is located in the Time and Temperature building in the heart of downtown. This is a great place to sit on the lounge chairs and sip martinis. The second floor of this trendy hangout is a full blown dance club with an amazing stage area and room to move. If you are in the mood to move to some of the best club music around than the Old Port Tavern or OPT as it is known, is the place to go. The crowd is young twenties, moving to the DJ’s rhythm jam that is being pumped on to the dance floor. It may not be New York but, the club scene in Portland is happening and there are plenty of places to choose from.
Historic Sites In Portland: Spending A Day Rich In History
Summer,Fall,Winter & Spring: Maine’s largest city, Portland is a wonderful place and rich in history. If you are looking for something to do that just may broaden your horizons, why not spend a day in history. Your tour can start right in the heart of downtown on Congress Street where you will find the statue of Nike, the goddess of Victory on Monument Square. This is the monument for all of Maine’s Soilders & Sailors who have died fighting for this country. Just a few blocks away you will find the Wadworth-Longfellow House where Maine’s famous poet lived and wrote. Close by is the First Parish Church, part of Portland’s Freedom Trail. This historic church was constructed in 1825 and still has the original weathervane from the original wooden structure of the church. The Tate House is where mast agent, George Tate and his family resided. This unique structure was in its time considered to be quite stylish and on the cutting edge of design. Heading towards the Eastern Promenade you will find the Portland Observatory which was constructed in 1807. Its purpose was a maritime signaling observation tower which was used to alert merchants of incoming ships. Next, hop in your car and head toward Cape Elizabeth so you can be sure to see Maine’s most photographed and oldest lighthouses, Portland Head Light. Set on the historical grounds of Fort Williams you can also browse around the park to find the cannon batteries as well as Goddard Mansion. Portland has so many more historic places to see one day in history may not be enough so spend some time in history, it’s a fun and unique thing to do.
