Several oceanside resorts such as Sebasco Harbor Resort offer wedding packages that include some of the most romantic and scenic spots around. If the ocean is not what you are yearning for than maybe it’s an upscale hotel like the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland in their magnificant ball room that is fit for Cinderella’s Ball. Perhaps it a local golf course with big white tents on the lawns of the Samoset Resort in Rockland. The Rangley Lakes region offers rustic post and beam lodges with huge front porches looking out over the lake. Where ever you choose picking your spot in Maine is not so much a matter of finding a spot and more choosing which one best suits you and what you are looking for. Whatever you decide your Maine wedding will certainly be one that will be a lasting memory for years to come.

Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: If you have never been to the quaint coastal town of Damariscotta, than you are missing out on a gem. Nestled between Wiscasset and Camden you could potentially drive right by on Route 1 without realizing you’ve passed this town. Although, it may not seem like it offers visitors the amenities of the larger coastal towns like Boothbay, visitors will be surprised. The downtown is littered with unique shops, and visitors will delight in the pottery, jewelry and antiques that can be found within the walls of these establishments. If you are looking for places to dine, the Damariscotta River Grill offers and elegant yet unpretentious atmosphere with delicious food that of course includes native seafood like lobster, scallops and shrimp. The area also offers some great inns and bed and breakfasts to stay at like the Damariscotta Mill Inn. Damariscotta is located on Great Salt Bay which feeds into Damariscotta Lake. The lake offers some of the best swimming, camping, fishing and boating around. Damariscotta Mills is the pathway between Great Salt Bay and the lake and is home to the alewife fish ladder. The path along the fish ladder is free and open to the public and makes for a great way to spend some time observing the arduous task these fish go through to get to the lake. While in Damariscotta you should explore the tidal pools of Round Pond and Shaw’s Fish and Lobster Wharf in New Harbor. Here you can enjoy the freshest seafood straight off the boats. The restaurant is actually located on the wharf where the boats unload and served on picnic tables on the deck. Take some time to explore the Damariscotta area, you’ll be amazed at what you discover.

Winter,Spring,Summer & Fall: If you are looking for some great things to do in Maine that won’t cost you a thing, then you should consider taking a trip to the Mast Landing Sanctuary in Freeport. The Sanctuary offers great hiking trail which are perfect for families with children. The trails are level and runs along a tidal stream. There are many opportunities to observe wildlife including blue heron catching fish just off shore. The whole area is absolutely beautiful year round. I recently hiked the trails with my kids during the winter months. The site of the ice formations meeting up to the granite coast line were breath taking. Another great place to enjoy for free is in Warren where the Georges River Canal System runs. There is a small park off Route 90 called Payson Park. This area was part of the lock system where mast sail ships would carry cargo to from the St. George River to the Atlantic. The park is small but, rich in history. A bridge leads visitors over the water and to the trails which run through the woods along the river. There is a play area for the kids and picnic tables in case you want to stop and enjoy your lunch. Antoher place to visit for free if you are in the Augusta area is the State House. Not only can you take a tour of this amazing structure made out of Maine granite but, you can also visit the Maine State Museum and State Library all found on the Capitol Grounds at no cost. If you find yourself in Houlton, then there is the Oakfield Railroad Museum which is a restored railroad depot turned into a museum. This is a great place to take the kids and check out how people use to travel. There are old steam railcars for visitors to explore and the train station is set up with historical pictures and artifacts like train tickets and the clothing the train engineers once wore. There are plenty of free things to do in Maine which are fun and informative for all ages. Take advantage of some of these great places the next time you are trying to think of something new to do.

Spring,Summer,Fall & Winter: Maine getaways are not hard to find it’s just a matter of what you are interested in doing. Once you decide whether it is a weekend getaway or a weeklong vacation it’s then just a matter of deciding what you are looking for. Maybe it’s spending time in the peace and quiet of a seaside inn or a cabin in the wilderness whatever it is, there are plenty of choices for you. There are some nice Inns in the Boothbay region. Boothbay is close to the whole mid-coast area with towns like Damariscotta and Bath close by. There are plenty of things to do, picnicking on Ocean Point, whale watching excursions, lobster bakes, shopping and antiquing in the area. In addition, there are some great beaches close by like Reid State Park and Popham Beach. Dining options are plentiful and golf is close by. Another great place for a Maine getaway is the Rangley Lakes region. This is a year round getaway destination with snowmobiling and skiing in the winter months and the gorgeous lake in the summer. There are cabins that can rented lakeside, B & B’s as well as resorts that offer visitors plenty to do. The area boast great fishing, swimming and boating in the summer months. There is plenty of wildlife to observe, hiking trails along the lake and near Saddleback. If you are looking for more of a secluded getaway where you can escape, you might consider the Isle Au Haut where you can stay at the Keepers House Inn which is a 45 minute boat ride to the edges of this tiny island which is surrounded by mountains, trees and the incredible Atlantic Ocean. The unspoiled beauty of this tiny island surrounds you and you will definitely find peace and quiet once you arrive. Maine getaways are plentiful to choose from it’s just a matter of deciding where you want to go.

Spring,Summer,Fall & Winter: If you have never been to the Camden area than you are missing a special gem on the Maine coastline. This area sparkles in the summer and fall with the blue ocean as the background to the whole area. There are some great places to stay while you are in the area and one of my favorite places is the Youngtown Inn. Just slightly off the beaten path of US Route 1, when you arrive it’s as if you have just stepped back into the early 1800’s with this stately home before you. The inn is “classic New England” offering 6 unique guest rooms and a fantastic restaurant on-site. The Inn was once part of a farm that has been restored with many of the original features. From the pumpkin pine floors to the original fireplaces, guest will find this is a great place to relax and take in this beautiful part of Maine. This Youngtown Inn is actually located in Lincolnville which is only a couple miles outside of Camden. If you are planning a wedding this is a great spot for an intimate event with family and friends. While you are in the area, there are so many spots to visit from Mt. Battie, to Camden Harbor and Lincolnville Beach. This is a great time to begin to make summer plans so be sure to check out The Youngtown Inn, you will be glad you did and it may just be a place you decide to visit year after year.
