Maine Things To Do Monhegan Island: Getting Away From It All

Summer: Do you ever dream of just getting away from it all? You know, the buzz of everyday life. Well if you are in search of some real rest and relaxation, Monhegan Island may be just what you are looking for. Situated 10 miles off the mainland this island is home to a community filled with fishermen, artist, poets, beautiful scenery, a working lighthouse and locals that have lived there for generations. Don't have your own boat? Getting there by ferry is an option. There are boats departing from Boothbay, New Harbor and Port Clyde daily. Visitors are greeted by a picturesque rocky coastline, harbor seals basking in the sunshine and whales making their way through the cold Atlantic waters. Once on the island the scenery is out of picture books. Lush floral and fauna contrasted by weathered shingled houses with a backdrop of the dark blue waters of the ocean.

The village has a school house and library as well as shops which offers local artisans goods up for sale. Plan to spend the night at the Island Inn, a beautiful turn of the century inn overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Inn's staff will pick you up right at the Ferry Terminal and have you checked in and sitting on their porch just in time to catch the most amazing sunset you will ever see. With plenty of coves and hiking trails you'll want to make sure you pack the right shoes. The island is casual and bringing a sweater and rain gear during the summer months is a good idea. If you plan on going on a day excursion the Inn's dining room will even pack you a lunch to take with you. Monhegan Island is a beautiful escape alone or for the whole family. If you are looking for a way to get away from it all, this just may destination you have been looking for.
