 Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race: Spills And Thrills

Spring: The third week of April thrillseekers and spectators flock to the Bangor area for this popular spring event. The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race has been drawing a crowd since it's inception in 1967. The 16.5 mile race is open to the public and competitiors come from all over to to enjoy this annual rite of spring. The course consists of 10 miles of flatwater, and six miles of class I-IV rapids with a mandatory portage of the class IV rapids. Spectators line the banks of the river at the rapids eagerly anticipating the action of upsets and flipped boats. The area around Six Mile Falls is the most popular spot for viewing the mayhem and carnage
that often occurs. The character of the race is generally dictated by the rivers varied flows and is different from year to year, adding to the challenge. The finish line lies at the confluence of the Kenduskeag and Penobscot rivers, and win or lose it's all about getting out and enjoying a springtime tradition in Maine.
